Though dreadlocks were worn in ancient culture, they are still relevant in many parts of the world today. This is especially true when it comes to black hairstyles. Locs are one of the most eye catching natural looks to date. And they can be styled and accessorized in various ways. In this image,Tonisha Kenty from Lady T’s Lovely Locs in Crestview, FL shows us just how unique your locks can be if you add a few beads to them.

What You’ll Need:
Dread WaxResidue Free ShampooRubber bands
Rat Tail Comb
Hooded Dryer (optional)

Step 1: Shampoo your hair. It’s important that your hair is extremely clean and free of residue before attempting to lock it. The more clean it is, the more manageable and shiny your locks will be. Many shampoos leave chemicals behind which causes them to become dull or greasy. So try washing your hair with residue free shampoo so as to not compromise your look. You may sit beneath a hooded dryer or allow it to air dry.

Step 2: Divide your hair into sections. Sectioning off your hair is one of the most important parts of dreading because this will determine how big or small each of your locks will be. For the smaller locks, section your hair into 1 inch by 1 inch parts. Use rubber bands to hold the ends so as to keep your sections separate until it’s time to twist them.

Step 3: Twist your hair. After you’ve divided your hair into smaller sections, twist each of these sections clockwise. You may also opt to use a comb to snag the ends of your hair and then twist. Whatever method you use, make sure to work dread wax into each section as you twist. This will help to hold the dread in place.

Step 4: Add your beads. Choose the bead that fits the most securely around your lock. The goal is to make sure that it is tight enough to remain on the lock, but not so tight that it cannot be removed. Apply the bead to your loc by sliding it on to the end of your hair. Then make sure the beads are completely secure before moving on to the next loc.

Step 5: Style Your Hair. Gather the hair from the hairline at your forehead to that above your ears and then pin it back. Depending on what look you want, you may choose to pin it straight back, or more or less to one side of your head. If you would like to bring attention to the back of your hair, then pull it to the front and drape it over your shoulders.

As you can see, making sure you achieve the perfect loc takes time and dedication. However, if you are willing to put in the work, you can have the perfect dreadlocks as well as the accessories to go along with them.
