When we think of black hairstyles, one of the first things that comes to mind is natural hair. And Danielle Warren from Nubian Designs in North Charleston, SC.shows us how natural hairstyles can be soft and flattering. Below is a step by step guide to creating this look on your own.

What You Will Need:
Shampoo
Conditioner
Oil
Wide Tooth Comb
Diffuser (optional)
Afro pick (optional)

Step 1: Shampoo
Wash your hair. Natural hair is more manageable when the scalp is clean and free of product build up. Just make sure to use a conditioner with a high ph balance so as to retain as much moisture as possible.

Step 2: Condition and Detangle
Apply a liberal amount of conditioner to your hair. Conditioner helps to soften the hair so that it makes it much easier to comb through a detangle. Take the palm of your hand and then rub hair in circular motions in order to form small curls. The direction in which you rub will depend on your particular curl pattern, so try to experiment to see which way gives the best results.

Step 3: Air Dry
Allow your hair to air dry. Air drying prevents heat damage. However you may choose to use a diffuser to speed the process along.

Alternative Option
Step 3: Two Strand Twist
In some cases, depending on the texture of your hair, your curl definition may be a little lacking. This is when it best to intervene with a little extra manipulation. Simply add a thick oil to your hair after adding the condition. Then divide you hair into eight or nine even sections. (Keep in mind that the more sections you create and the smaller they are, the more curly your hair will be.)

Twist each section into a two-strand twist. Make sure the braids are relatively tight so that they do not easily unravel during the drying process. As you get to the end of the twist, twirl your finger around the braid to secure it. Do this until all of your hair is completely twisted.

Step 4: Air Dry
You can allow your hair to air dry. You may also consider using a diffuser. Whichever method you choose, just make sure not to manipulate your hair until it is completely dry. The dryer it is, the more polished your finished look will be.

Step 5: Separate Your Twists
Create volume by pulling your twists apart. Make sure that every section of your head is evenly covered. However, you should remember that the more you pull each twist apart, the less defined it may become. So don’t tease your hair excessive. Use an afro pick to gently pull from the root of your hair. This will create volume without ruining the curls.

Though natural hair is very versatile, this does not mean you have to do a lot to it to be stylish.
